Connecting Dorset is an innovative project, which has brought broadband to rural communities across Dorset through their local Parish Councils, Village Halls, Community Centres or alternative venues which are used by the communities with no communal hall.

The project has provided a phone and broadband line and computer hardware enabling Internet access to communities and individuals in areas where there are still a significant number of digitally excluded people.

The project was the brainchild of the Chief Executive of Dorset Community Action, Dorset’s Rural Community Council, and the Chief Executive of the Dorset Association of Parish and Town Councils.  British Telecom supported the project with both funding and development support through Citizens Online, a national charity which is committed to researching and addressing the issues of Universal Internet Access and promoting digital inclusion.

After a successful application to the Dorset Rural Renaissance Project the project was officially launched in March 2008 in the presence of The Right Honourable Oliver Letwin MP for West Dorset.

Since the launch 40 community venues within villages have been connected to the internet and received a range of hardware and software computer equipment.  140 Parish Councils have also received a laptop and broadband connection where needed.  It is anticipated this will enable them to better serve their communities and deliver the benefits of e-government.
