Halls

Where possible the Village Hall or Community Centre has been the chosen venue for the Connecting Dorset equipment and connection, however, this has not been possible in all villages.  In those communities without a communal building, or those villages where it was not appropriate to install the Connecting Dorset facility in the existing hall, alternative venues have been used.

These have included a Co-operative Pottery sited in the middle of Symondsbury, just outside Bridport.  This installation was supported by the Walbridge Trust, a local charity and as a direct result of these actions a public internet facility is now available 18 hours a week to local residents.

A recent installation took place in The Shave Cross Inn in the Marshwood Vale, an extremely rural area of Dorset with a small and dispersed population.  The Connecting Dorset facility has been installed in the Function Room adjoin the pub which also boasts an award winning restaurant with a Caribbean menu.  Whoever said the countryside was boring!

40 venues across the county of Dorset have been connected and local people are enjoying using this increased public internet access and computer equipment for many exciting activities including

  • Internet research and general browsing
  • Computer clubs
  • Genealogy clubs/family history/local history groups
  • Coffee mornings and lunch clubs
  • Private functions (one birthday party turned global after an internet link was achieved with fellow relatives celebrating simultaneously in Australia)
  • an online training centre
  • Resident and Community Associations
  • Digital Photography clubs
  • Parish councils (to display online planning applications at public meetings)
  • Cubs/Scouts/Brownies
  • Youth groups
  • Gardening groups/Horticultural Societies
  • Village Hall Committee
  • Discussion group
  • Historical Society
  • Village Film night
  • and many more

A list of all the halls connected is available to download in word format

An induction pack and information sheets are available in the frequently asked questions section of the site.
